ADMINISTERING AN INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTION
Time Allotment: 5 mins

1. Assemble the equipment
2. Explain the procedure to patient
3. Withdraw medication from vial with prescribed amount of medication
4. Do not add air to syringe remove needle and replace with new needle.
5. Lactate the site of choice. Don disposable gloves
6. Clean area thoroughly with antimicrobial swab, using friction. Allow alcohol to dry
7. Remove needle cap by pulling it straight off
8. Displace skin in a Z-track manner by pulling to one side, or spread skin at the site using your non dominant hand
9. Hold syringe in your dominant hand between thumb and forefinger quickly dart needle using your dominant hand
10. As soon as needle is in place, move your non dominant hand to hold lower end of syringe. Slide your dominant hand to tip of barrel.
11. Aspirate slowly pulling back on plunger to determine whether the needle is in a blood vessel. If blood is aspirated discard needle syringe and medication. Prepare new sterile setup and inject in another site
12. If blood is not aspirated, inject slowly the solution
13. Remove needle slowly and steadily. Release displace tissue if Z-track technique is used
14. Appky gentle pressure at site with a small dry sponge
15. Do not recap used needle, Discard needle and syringe in appropriate receptacle.
